Careers: Legal Assistant

Job Description

The terms “legal assistant” and “paralegal” can be used interchangeably to describe the same position within the legal field. A legal assistant’s job is to help a lawyer or attorney (terms also used interchangeably) with administrative and research work that does not require a law degree to perform.

A legal assistant’s job can be varied and challenging. A legal assistant can interview clients, conduct research, draft and summarize certain documents and conduct investigations, but cannot participate in any activity that is “generally considered the practice of law,” according to the National Association of Legal Assistants.

Education and Training:

A legal assistant does not need a formal education, in the way of a specific degree; however, a certain amount of training is required in order to understand the responsibilities involved in the job. You can attend a training program, often offered through educational institutions such as community and career colleges, to learn about the job skills involved in being a legal assistant and to earn a certificate. Although not necessary, obtaining an associate’s or bachelor’s degree would be helpful for an aspiring legal assistant.
